19. Château de Puymartin
Château de Puymartin, built around 1270, served as a border between France and England
when the Hundred Year War began. During the 16th century Jean de Saint-Clar, upon his return from war,
found his wife in the arms of a lover. The lover was instantly executed but Thérèse de Saint-Clar
was imprisoned for 15 years in the small room in the north tower and upon her death the room was sealed
with her body inside.
Since then many people, including the current owner, have seen La Dame Blanche, a women dressed in white,
wandering around the château at night.
Over the centuries, Château de Puymartin has changed hands several times,
was looted, deprived of its ramparts, towers, and roofing and at some point abandoned.
The family of the current owner took control of the castle in the late 19th century and
started the long process of restoration.
In addition to the elegance of the overall architecture, you can admire the spiral staircase,
a room of honor decorated with tapestries from the Aubusson workshop, French-style beams
and magnificent furniture handed down over the generations.
