12. Lascaux II
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site: "Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley"
Lascaux is the most beautiful and the most famous Paleolithic painted cave in the world.
It contains more than 1500 pictures of bulls, bison and horses, all of them
around 17 000 years old. There are also signs of human representation.
The Cave of Lascaux was discovered in 1940 and soon people from all around the world came to see it.
The heavy traffic and change of atmosphere caused the colors and details of the art to fade and almost disappear.
In 1963, in the interest of preservation, the original cave was closed to tourists.
The adjacent Lascaux II, an impressive replica painstakingly reproduced by contemporary artists
using the same techniques, dyes and tools was opened in 1983 and it has proven to be very popular with the public.
