11. Font de Gaume
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site: "Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley"
|
Located near Les Eyzies, Font-de-Gaume Cave is a showpiece of Magdalenian
engravings and paintings from around 14 000 BC. Discovered in 1901, the 130 m long cave contains
around 250 paintings. Only 30 of them, the most beautiful and the best preserved, can be visited.
It is the last cave in Europe with prehistoric (polychrome) painting still open to the public.
Only 200 visitors are allowed to enter the cave each day, in small groups of 20. Visits are by appointment only.
To make a reservation you must call +33 5.53.06.86.00 (between 10:30-12 or 14:30-16)
at least one month in advance (15 days October-April.)
About 50 tickets are put on sale every morning at 9:15 (except Saturday when the cave is closed) for a visit later in the day.
There is usually a line so it is better to arrive early. If you do not get a ticket you can still visit
the other sites in the Vézère valley, including Lascaux II.
