4. Domme
| Domme is without a doubt one of the Dordogne's most favorite destinations. A hilltop town, situated 250 meters above the river
at the top of a rocky cliff overlooking the Dordogne valley, it is an example of the medieval fortified town known as a bastide.
It was founded by Philip the Bold in 1281.
This magnificent town is entered by a large fortified gate at the bottom of the main street. The huge towers on either side served as
prison to the Knights of Templar following the dissolution of the order in 1307. The main street then goes up to the town's center.
From the terraced belvedere next to the church there are breathtaking 180 degree views from the Cingle de Montfort in the east
to La Roque Gageac and Beynac in the west.
| You can escape the summer heat in Domme: on the main square there is an entrance to the caves. The caves were used
to shelter the town's inhabitants during the Hundred Years' War. There are almost 500 meteres of stalactite filled galleries.
At the other end a glass lift takes you back up to the surface.
