16. Commarque
The beautiful and impressive ruins of Chateau de Commarque and the village surrounding it are set in a small and unspoiled valley half-way between Sarlat and Les Eyzies.
Dating back to the 1100s the site was abandoned in the 18th century and almost forgotten.
It was not until 1968 that Hubert de Commarque bought his ancestors' ruins and undertook the slow process of restoration.
A program of archeological research has been in place for several years.
The views from the top are spectacular.
Cave dwellings down below can also be visited.
Accessible on foot by taking a charming 15 minute walk through the forest, the site is well worth the visit.
It requires a bit of climbing up once you get there.
But it is great fun for kids and the whole family.
