9. La Roque Saint-Christophe
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site: "Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley"
Halfway between Montignac and Les Eyzies an enormous cliff called La Roque Saint-Christophe rises above the Vézère river.
The cliff, one kilometer long and eighty metres high, has been endlessly eroded by frost and the river
creating around one hundred rock shelters and long overhead terraces.
Of the 147 prehistoric sites in the Vézère valley, La Roque Saint-Christophe is the oldest and most majestic.
This site is truly remarkable, not only for its rare, wild beauty but also for its size, the number of dwellings and the length of time it has been occupied by man.
These natural cavities have been lived in since around 55 000 BC and were later altered to become a fort and a town in the Middle Ages.
A tour of the Roque St Christophe gives you an idea of how the cave dwellings were laid-out.
