4. Cahors

Pont de Valentré, one of the finest medieval monuments in France, is a three towered fortified bridge built in 1308 to keep the English out of Cahors. The town itself, with its medieval streets and the cathedral, is also worth a visit.

Cahors is well known for its excellent dark red, almost black wine.
